The Magic Lantern
Down the dark back-alleys and unseen corners of the city, a crowd gathers around a young girl who shines a light – a so-called “Magic Lantern” – projecting images of exotic lands and poltergeists. Maxine is a migrant, a Savoyard, delighting her audience with colourful songs from the opera houses of Europe, eking out her living on the streets of nineteenth-century London. Pursued by the authorities who see her homelessness as a crime and by a criminal padrone who is after more than her money, can Maxine use the Lanterns' magic to survive?
With creative contributions from secondary school pupils who will team up with a cast of professional opera makers, The Magic Lantern will be promenade opera like no other, mixing nineteenth-century street music with contemporary urban styles – a hurdy-gurdy-opera-Grime mashup – illuminating the connections we share across borders, cultures and history.
The Magic Lantern is set to appear in 2018/19.
